Many of our participants will be traveling from outside Kentucky and will be looking for things to do aside from running the Iron Horse on Sunday morning. One of the more popular fall activities for those in the Bluegrass region is the fall race meet at Keeneland Race Course. Keeneland races only two times a year, in April and again in October. If it’s a nice weather day expect 30,000+ fans to attend on a Saturday which means in addition to watching world class thoroughbreds you also get a world class people watching experience. Millionaire owners, overdressed college students, horse people from around the world, University of Kentucky athletes, local movers and shakers, they all gather at Keeneland. This year will see Keeneland hosting the annual Breeders Cup World Championships for the first time so the 2015 fall meet will be especially exciting. If you’ve never been a horse racing fan prepare to become one when you enter the Keeneland grounds. Keeneland was founded in 1936 and is now a National Historic Landmark. It contains beautifully landscaped grounds that are open daily for visitors year round. Every Saturday morning during the race meet you can experience Sunrise Trackside which includes tours, paddock demonstrations, handicapping seminars, children’s activities and breakfast. Speaking of breakfast plan on grabbing a bite at the famous Track Kitchen where you can rub elbows with well known trainers, jockeys and owners while you work on your carb loading. Keeneland does race on Sundays so if you can’t make the Saturday races you can attend on Sunday after running the Iron Horse. Keeneland is only a 2o minute drive from the Iron Horse race site in Midway so you have plenty of time to make the afternoon races.
